I read the Editorial first. It�s nice to see our esteemed Editor in the flesh. It�s nice to be able to match a name with a face. At the risk of stereotyping, he looks like a professor of military history. It�s pleasing to read that the Blog is doing well, is gaining ground. I sincerely appreciate the work Rich and George have put into this extra technological arm of the traditional Lone Warrior publication. (I am also glad that they �conspired� to find a home for my fantastical piece about Norsemen versus Samurai.) It�s good to read that the Blog has �started a fire� under some new writers/contributors. (I shall comment briefly on each piece in Number 176 in a moment.) I can both sympathize and empathize with Dr. Barbuto�s conflict over what to do next. In my case, the indecision stems from a third �experiment� with the battle of Ligny. (As of this writing, I have finished Game Turn 3 and hope to complete 4 and 5 today. Even so, there is a feeling of uncertainty, for lack of a better word.)The paragraph on work-related travels was interesting. The remark about the re-enactor appearing in uniform brought to mind the day I was observing in a middle school. The tenured social studies teacher was dressed in the uniform worn by Morgan�s riflemen at Saratoga. Talk about bringing history to life!His four-point summary has provided (unintentionally?) a spark of inspiration for a �position paper.� I have some very rough notes typed out. I hope to get something more concrete before the end of this month. As I started with the last page of the current issue, I think I will proceed to work my way from back to front. Again, I will strive to be brief in my remarks. I thought Graham Empson�s ACW Campaign piece impressive for its scope, content and attention to detail. It�s interesting to read about/learn about the approach and method of others. In some respects, it makes me question my apparent fixation on refighting historical battles. I cannot be sure, but I think Rob Morgan has set some kind of record for number of articles in a single issue. Well done, Mr. Morgan! Though I �cut my teeth� on the hobby by wargaming WWII, my interests have gravitated (or graduated) elsewhere. I won�t offer much on his River Fleet piece either, as the vast majority of my wargaming pursuits are strictly land-based. Even so, I am sure there is food for thought there for similarly-minded wargamers. I quite enjoyed his Ruritania autobiography. The black & white pics of the old Airfix boxes brought back many memories of childhood/teen-aged years. Oh, the simple joy of pushing around unpainted plastics on crudely cut cardboard bases, using rules that would be derided as primitive by today�s standards. Jeffrey Chorney�s article, in conjunction with the Editorial, lead me to believe that I�m missing out on something by not delving into the War of 1812. I know the �basics,� I guess. There�s Washington being burned, there�s that unnecessary battle down in New Orleans . . . there was Lake Champlain and Lieutenant John Paul Jones . . . hmmm, and wasn�t there something about a botched invasion of Canada? His specific approach as well as article title appears to have provided some inspiration. I am thinking about drafting a piece titled �More for Less.� wherein I detail my approach to this fascinating and sometimes frustrating hobby of ours. My piece seems like ancient history, if you�ll pardon the word play. I make this �joke� because after fighting barbarians with Caesar, I went to New Mexico to fight bandits and now find myself in southern Belgium with tens of thousands of French and Prussians. My apology for the poor proof reading. At the bottom of page 34, I see that I inadvertently left the L off of Labienus. I hope no other mistakes escaped my attention. The offerings by Mr. Turner and Mr. LeLong merit further attention, I think. Presently, I am on my third experiment with Ligny. Based on what I�ve read, it was a very hot day on June 16, 1815. I have been trying to set up some rules to address the effects of this heat. Mr. Le Long�s ideas/tables look promising. Given that I am prone to stage larger actions versus small, I wonder if personality could be imparted without bogging down the flow of the game? I enjoyed reading about George Arnold�s modification and resulting battle using Command & Colors Ancients. I�ve actually looked at both boxed sets online. I�ve read a number of reviews, too. Fortunately, I�ve been able to refrain from making the order. (Money is so tight that it�s basically nonexistent, and at last count, I have 23 rule books/sets in addition to 2 �books� of my own design. Hmmmm, perhaps there�s an article idea right there? � Chris Hahn

I just got issue 176 the other day. I have not read all of the articles yet, but I’ve enjoyed the ones I that have. I enjoyed Rob Morgan’s article on Ruritania. It reminded me of my own, largely solo, campaign I ran in high school involving a civil war in fictional banana republic. I also mixed and matched various Airfix infantry packs along with Rocco mini-tanks (back in the day when they didn’t cost a fortune!). The main reason for joining SWA and subscribing to LW is to get tips and suggestions on ways to run solo battles and campaigns. So far, I have not been disappointed. Keep up the good work!
